The necklace is composed of 14mm Clear Aqua Recycled Glass beads made by the Krobo People of Ghana, Africa. Powder glass beads are made by crushing glass into a fine powder and heating it to a high temperature, causing the particles to fuse together. The glass is then poured into clay molds, with a cassava leaf stem used to make the hole. They are baked in an oven, and the glass fuses and the cassava stem burns up. This technique has been used in Africa for centuries.
The White Glass Ashanti Beads are 13-14mm diameter, and also crafted in Ghana, Africa by the Ashanti People. The process of making these beads is unique to Africa and has been in use for over 1,000 years. In a similar fashion to the Krobo beads, pulverized glass of various colors is poured into a clay mold, using a cassava stem to form the bead's hole. The mold is placed in a furnace and heated until the glass particles congeal without actually melting, and the stem burns out. The Ghanaians have been making beads in this manner since the 1600s. Ashanti beads are also known as "talking beads." They get their name from the distinct sounds that the various shaped beads make. The beads are intended to knock together as a person moves.
